Instagram comment to DM: what it is and how it works
Someone comments a word on your reel and a DM with the link lands in their inbox. What comment-to-DM is, how it works, the rules Instagram sets, and what it costs.

Instagram comment to DM is an automation that sends a private message to anyone who comments a chosen keyword on your post or reel, usually carrying the link they asked for. It runs through Instagram's official messaging API, it works only on professional accounts, and each comment can be answered with one private message within seven days.
We built Instoly around exactly this loop, so this is our plain account of what happens between the comment and the DM, which limits come from Instagram rather than from us, and when it is worth using. If you already know all that and want the steps, the setup walkthrough is the shorter read.
How does Instagram comment to DM work?
Under the hood it is four steps, and knowing them explains most of the surprises people run into.
- Someone comments on your post or reel. Instagram notifies the connected app with the text of the comment, its ID and an ID for the person who wrote it.
- The app checks the comment against your keyword. In Instoly that is the flow attached to that post, matching a word inside the comment, the whole comment, or any comment at all.
- The app sends a private reply tied to that one comment. It lands in the person's Inbox if they follow you and in their Requests folder if they do not, and it carries a link back to the post they commented on.
- Instoly also posts a short public reply under the comment, so everyone else scrolling can see that you answered.
One detail catches almost everyone the first time. A comment from the account that owns the post never gets a DM, because we skip it on purpose, so test from a second phone or ask a friend to comment.
What rules does Instagram set for comment-to-DM?
Four rules come from Instagram itself, and no tool can work around them. We set them out because they explain why some comments get a DM and some never can.
- Professional accounts only. The Instagram API serves creator and business accounts, so a personal account has nothing to connect.
- One message per comment. A private reply is a single message to the commenter. A follow-up is only possible if the person writes back, and then it has to go within 24 hours of their reply.
- Seven days. A private reply has to be sent within seven days of the comment. On Instagram Live it is stricter: only while the broadcast is running.
- Your permission. When you connect, you approve the permissions the app asks for. Instoly asks for access to your comments and to your messages, because answering a comment needs the first and sending the DM needs the second.
One rule is ours rather than Instagram's: we only ever message people who commented. A comment flow answers the comment it was given and nothing else, so nobody gets a cold DM from your account.
Why move a comment into the DMs at all?
Because the person has already told you what they want, in public, and the most useful answer is the link itself in a place they will look. A reply that sends them off to find it on your profile asks for one more step. A DM puts it in their hand.
The reasons we would give for setting it up:
- Nobody waits for you. A live flow answers comments while you are shooting, travelling or asleep.
- The keyword does the sorting. Only people who typed your word get the message, so your DMs fill with people asking for the thing rather than with everyone.
- You can count it. Each flow keeps its own numbers, comments matched, messages sent and link clicks, so you can tell which post actually sent people somewhere.
- Your comments section shows you answered. The public reply under each comment tells the next person the DM is real.
What it will not do is make a weak post pull comments. The word has to be worth typing and easy to say out loud, which is why we wrote a separate piece on choosing a keyword that behaves.
What can the DM actually carry?
Because a comment buys exactly one message, everything has to fit into that message. Instoly gives you four shapes for it:
- Plain text with your link in it.
- Text with up to three buttons, each with a title of 20 characters or fewer.
- A carousel of up to ten cards, each with its own picture and link.
- A product card with its picture, price, link and code.
When the message has a card, the card wins. We send your text as the card's headline rather than as a separate message, because a second message in reply to a comment would be refused. So a DM with buttons should read as one line. We go further into wording in what to put in the DM.

Is Instagram comment to DM allowed?
Yes, when it runs through Instagram's official messaging API on a professional account and only answers people who commented. Each comment can receive one private reply, sent within seven days of the comment.
Does comment to DM work on reels?
Yes, a private reply can answer a comment on a reel just as on a feed post. An Instoly flow can watch one post, a few chosen posts, or every post including the ones you publish later.
Do people have to follow me to get the DM?
No, nobody has to follow you to receive it. The DM lands in their Inbox if they follow you and in their Requests folder if they do not.
Can I send DMs for comments left before I set it up?
Only for comments up to seven days old, because older ones cannot take a private reply. On Instoly's Pro and Business plans a new flow can catch up on those, up to 50 comments per post, while the free plan answers new comments only.
