How to auto-reply to Instagram comments with a link

Someone comments on your reel and the link lands in their DMs. Here is the whole setup, the two windows that decide whether it sends, and the test that makes a working flow look broken.

To auto-reply to Instagram comments with a DM, connect a professional Instagram account to Instoly and build one flow: when someone comments your keyword, Instoly sends them your link in a DM. It works on the free plan, which includes 1,000 DM and comment credits a month. Here are the steps:

  1. Switch to a professional account: in Instagram, open Settings, then Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account.
  2. In Instoly, open Settings, connect Instagram, and allow the messaging permission.
  3. Go to Auto DM, choose New, and pick a comment on a post or reel as what starts the DM.
  4. Choose the post it should run on and the keyword people will comment.
  5. Write the reply with your link, or let Instoly write it, then go live.
  6. Test it by commenting from a second account, not the one that owns the post.

Setting one up takes about ten minutes, and most of that is on Instagram's side rather than ours. Below is the whole thing end to end, including the two time windows that decide whether a DM sends at all, and the test that makes a perfectly good flow look dead.

What do you need before you start?

Three things, and the first one is not optional.

  1. A professional account. In Instagram, open Settings, then Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account. Creator or business both work. Automated replies run through Instagram's messaging API, which carries messages between a professional account and the people who write to it, so this switch comes first.
  2. A connection. In Instoly, open Settings and connect Instagram. You log in on instagram.com itself, which is why we never see your password.
  3. The messaging permission. Instagram asks you to approve a set of permissions when you connect, and we need the messaging one. Skip it and your flow will look perfectly set up and quietly send nothing.

If you are weighing up whether any of this puts your account at risk, we wrote that out separately in what Instagram allows and what it does not.

The permission step is the one people skip, and it fails silently.

How do you build the first flow?

In Instoly, go to Auto DM and choose New. The wizard asks what should start the DM, and for this one you want a comment on a post or reel. Then it asks which posts it should run on.

Next you write the reply, or let Instoly write it for you, and then you go live. That is the whole wizard. A flow is one sentence underneath all of it: when someone comments X, send them Y.

Choosing X is the part worth slowing down for, because a word like SEND or LINK turns up in ordinary comments and will fire on people who never asked for anything. We went through what misfires and what does not in choosing a keyword that behaves.

Why does your own test look like a failure?

Because you commented from the account that owns the post. That is the single most common setup mistake, and it produces exactly the symptom of a broken flow: the comment sits there, no DM arrives, and everything in the dashboard says live.

Borrow a second phone, or ask a friend to comment. Once you see the DM land on their screen, you know the flow works, and you can stop debugging something that was never broken.

How long does a DM have to go out?

There are two windows, and they get mixed up constantly. A DM that answers a comment is a private reply, and it can be sent within seven days of that comment. A DM to someone who messaged you first is different: that conversation gives you 24 hours to respond.

Neither number matters much for a live comment flow, because our sends go out in seconds. They matter when something has been paused, or when you are deciding whether to answer last week's comments by hand. A week-old comment can still take a private reply. A week-old conversation in your inbox cannot.

A comment gives you days. A conversation gives you a day.

What should the DM say?

The DM we would write is short, specific to what they asked for, and carries one link. Three links and a paragraph of enthusiasm reads as spam, and people report it.

  • Open with what they commented, so it reads as a reply rather than a broadcast.
  • Attach up to three buttons. Each button title has to fit inside 20 characters, so "Shop the dress" works and "Click here to shop the dress now" does not.
  • Write two or three variants. They rotate, so a hundred people do not all get a DM worded identically.
  • Add a public comment reply too. The person gets their link privately, and everyone else scrolling the comments sees that you answered.
The DM that performs is the one that sounds like you typed it while the reel was still uploading.

What do you check when nothing sends?

Most of the "why did it not send" questions we get are one of five things, and we would check them in this order:

  1. Is the flow live rather than draft or paused?
  2. Is it attached to the post people are actually commenting on?
  3. Are you testing from the account that owns the post? That one never delivers.
  4. Is Instagram still connected? Access expires periodically, and always when you change your Instagram password. Reconnecting leaves your flows, history and numbers untouched.
  5. Did you allow the messaging permission? If you are unsure, disconnect and reconnect, and accept everything.

If it is none of those, the keyword is usually the culprit, and switching from an exact match to a looser one fixes most of what we see.

Do I need a paid plan to set this up?

No, the free plan includes 1,000 DM and comment credits a month, unlimited flows and unlimited keywords, and no card is needed to start.

Instagram auto DM kaise lagaye?

Switch to a professional account, connect Instagram and allow the messaging permission, then build one flow: pick the keyword, write the reply with your link, and go live on a single post first.

Can it reply to comments on reels as well as posts?

Yes, a flow can watch a reel, a feed post, or every post on the account, and the DM works the same way in each case.

Does everyone who comments get a DM?

Only if you want that. A flow can trigger on an exact word, on a word anywhere in the comment, or on any comment at all, which is the setting to use for a giveaway.

Can I send a DM to people who have not commented?

No, automated messages only go to people who interacted with you first, which is the line between automation and spam.

Once it is live, Instoly watches that post for you and answers every comment that matches, while you are busy shooting the next reel.

The takeaway

Set it up on one post, test it from a second phone, and let it answer every comment after that.
