Creator or business account: which one should you pick on Instagram?

Instagram describes creator and business accounts by who they suit, not by a feature list. What the Help Centre says, what both types get, and what we could not confirm.

Creator or business is the first choice after you switch to a professional account, and it comes with very little explanation in the app. People pick one and hope.

This post sticks to what Instagram itself says, and tells you plainly where we could not find an answer.

How does Instagram describe creator and business accounts?

Instagram's Help Centre describes the two by who they suit. "Business accounts are best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers." And: "Creator accounts are best for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers."

Notice what is missing: a feature-by-feature comparison. Instagram describes the intended person, not a list of what each type can and cannot do. Anyone who gives you a neat table of differences is going beyond what the Help Centre says.

What do both account types get?

On the setup page Instagram says: "You now have access to the professional dashboard to see your insights or create and manage ads." That sentence appears for professional accounts as a whole, so the dashboard, insights and ad tools are not what separates the two.

  • The professional dashboard and your insights.
  • Tools to create and manage ads.
  • The ability to switch types, or go back to personal, later.

Does the category you pick decide the type?

A common mix-up is thinking the category label, such as Photographer or Shop, sets the type. Instagram says otherwise: "The category that you choose does not determine whether you'll set up a business or creator account." You pick the type separately from the label that shows on your profile.

What about music, and what can you not confirm?

Music is the one place where Instagram's help text mentions account types directly. It says: "certain business accounts and certain types of posts do not have access to the library." If your account does not have access, the page says you may be able to use Meta's Sound Collection.

That says certain business accounts, not all, and it says nothing about creator accounts. So we cannot tell you that creator accounts always have the library and business accounts never do.

Here is what we looked for and could not source: a full feature table, which type suits scheduling, and whether messaging tools differ by type. If a guide tells you these as facts, ask where it got them.

Our simple rule: pick the type that matches how you describe yourself, use the tools for a few weeks, and change it if something you need is missing.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a creator and a business account on Instagram?

Instagram describes business accounts as best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers, and creator accounts as best for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. It does not publish a feature-by-feature comparison.

Does my profile category decide my account type?

No. Instagram says the category you choose does not determine whether you set up a business or creator account.

Can I change from creator to business later?

Yes. Instagram says you can change your professional account type at any time.

Does a business account lose music?

Instagram says certain business accounts and certain types of posts do not have access to the licensed library, and that Meta's Sound Collection may be an alternative. It does not say all business accounts lose it.

Do both types get insights?

Instagram's setup page says a professional account gives you the professional dashboard to see insights. It does not list insights as different between the two.

The takeaway

Instagram describes the types by who they suit, not by features. Both get the professional dashboard, and you can change type at any time.
