Best Instagram Reel length in 2026: what Instagram says, and what it does not
Instagram lets you record Reels up to 20 minutes, but says Reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences. It names no best length. What the Help Centre and creators FAQ say.
Search for the best Reel length and you will find confident numbers. Instagram does not publish one.
It does publish two limits that matter: how long a Reel can be, and how long it can be and still be recommended to people who do not follow you.
How long can a Reel be?
Instagram's Help Centre says: "You can record and edit videos up to 20 minutes with Instagram Reels." And: "You can record one or multiple clips that add up to 20 minutes."
The same page notes that Reels is not available to everyone, so check your own app.
What does the 3-minute line mean?
The Help Centre also says: "Note: Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences."
The creators FAQ puts it as advice: "We recommend videos to unconnected audiences that are 3 minutes or less."
Read the two together. A longer Reel can still be posted and can still be watched by people who follow you or find it directly. What the pages say is that the recommendation to people who do not already follow you is for 3 minutes or less.
Is there a best length?
We did not find any Instagram page naming a best length, in seconds or minutes. Posts that give one are offering their own experience, not Instagram's rule.
What the creators FAQ does say about the start: "Make sure the first 3 seconds of your reel are engaging, so that people don't move on."
- If you want to reach new people, stay at 3 minutes or under.
- Spend your first 3 seconds on the point of the Reel.
- Check watch time in Insights to see how your own lengths perform.
That last line is our suggestion. Insights defines average watch time as watch time divided by the number of initial views, so you can compare your own Reels.
What size and shape should a Reel be?
The Help Centre says: "You can upload a reel with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16. Reels should have a minimum frame rate of 30 FPS (frames per second) and minimum resolution of 720 pixels."
