Can an Instagram creator or business account be private?

Instagram says business profiles cannot be private, and that switching a private account to professional makes it public. What the Help Centre says, what happens to follow requests, and how to go back.

Plenty of people want the insights a professional account offers and the quiet of a private one. It is a fair thing to want, and it is the question we get most often from people who are just starting to post.

The short version: according to Instagram's Help Centre, you cannot have both. Here is exactly what the Help Centre says, and what to do about it.

Can a professional account be private?

Instagram's page on making an account private says: "Bear in mind that business profiles aren't able to make their accounts private." It adds a way out: "If you want to make your business account private, first switch back to a personal account."

That sentence is about business profiles. The pages we read do not say the same thing in the same words about creator accounts, so we cannot tell you from Instagram's own text that a creator account can never be private. What we can point to is the next section, which covers both types.

We also searched Instagram's Help Centre pages for a feature called a "private professional account" and found nothing by that name. If you see one described elsewhere, check it against your own app before you rely on it.

What happens when you switch a private account to professional?

Instagram's page on switching says: "If your personal account is private, switching to a professional account will make it public." Professional covers both business and creator accounts, so this applies whichever you pick.

There is a second effect people miss. The same page says: "All pending follow requests will be automatically accepted when you go public." Anyone who had asked to follow you and was waiting becomes a follower the moment you switch.

The queue of requests goes through the gate with it.

Can you switch back, and what do you lose?

Yes. Instagram's page on creator and business accounts says: "You can switch back to a personal account or change your professional account type at any time."

There is a cost. The same page says that if you switch from a professional account to a personal account, "you'll no longer have access to ads" and you "may lose access to select tools." It does not list every tool, so check your own settings before you switch.

Switching back does not make you private by itself. Going private is a separate step you take once you are personal again.

You can switch back, and some tools stay behind.

If you want to stay private, what should you do?

Decide what you need most. If it is the professional tools, accept that the account is public. If it is privacy, stay on a personal account and make it private.

  • Want insights and ads: use a professional account, and treat everything you post as public.
  • Want a private account: stay on a personal account, or switch back to one first.
  • Not sure yet: stay personal until you have something to measure. You can switch at any time.

None of this needs to be decided today. Switching is not a one-way door, which is the most useful fact on this page.
